Project Premise:

After the COVID-19 pandemic and the quick rise of instant-streaming platforms, movie theaters find themselves in a tough spot— while people fall into unhealthy patterns of binge-watching in isolation, many chairs at the cinema remain empty. Day by day, the American movie theater finds itself closer to becoming classified as an endangered species and approaches an existence dangerously similar to that of the American Mall: on the brink of extinction.

My thesis, "Out with a BANG!", proposes a playful movie festival that tours through abandoned malls facing future demolition. This messy and fun inflatable adult playground reinvigorates the social scene surrounding public movie-going and shared consumption, while providing a new perspective to the long-forgotten shopping center.

Thesis Question:

With a rising preference of instant-streaming platforms and the uncertain future of the cinema, how can the movie theater experience adapt in order to reinvigorate the social scene surrounding public movie-going and shared consumption?
